Downloading Files

Downloading files is a basic function of the Internet. There are many types of files that can bee downloaded from the Web. On this page, we will discuss downloading PDF files.

PDF Files

What are PDF files? PDF stands for Portable Document Format. You download a PDF file from the Internet and then open it and print it using Adobe's free Acrobat Reader.

Why download PDF files? You will be able to download professional-looking material, such as our sheet music, to print and use.

Why are PDF files popular? PDF files are popular because they are the best way to send documents across the Internet. With PDF files you can send a document from one computer to another and it will look the same, just like sending a letter. And like letters, you do not have to be connected to the Internet to read them, only to download them.

What do I need to download PDF files? The only thing you need (apart from a computer and Internet connection) is Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe Acrobat is a free software program and it is very easy to download, so please don't be afraid. Just follow these simple instructions.

How to download Adobe Acrobat Reader:

1. Click on the "Get Acrobat Reader" button (or here) which will take you to Adobe's Web page.
2. First, you will be asked what program you want from a few choices. Select Acrobat Reader as it is free and the others cost money.
3. Then you will be asked for some basic information:

A. What language you require;
B. What platform you are using (Windows, Macintosh, etc.);
C. Your name; and,
D. Your e-mail address.

4. When you have filled in the information, you may then click to download Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Windows Users

If you are using a PC you need to have at least Windows 95. You will then be asked if you want to "Save the file to disk" or "Open it from the location." Choose "Save the file to disk" option.

It may be a good idea to create a folder called "downloads" for everything you download from the Internet. This is because it is easy to forget where you have downloaded files unless you have a dedicated directory for such files.

When Acrobat Reader has finished downloading, follow the instructions on your screen. When you have Acrobat Reader installed -- and after rebooting your PC -- you can then download any PDF file from the Internet. Then just click on the file, read it, print it, or make copies for others.

Macintosh Users

If you are using a Macintosh computer you will need at least Mac OS 7.1.2. Click on "Download." When the program has finished downloading, an icon will appear on your desktop. Double-click on this icon and then follow the instructions on your screen.
