backbone -- Main communications trunk line which local lines connect to communicate with the rest of the world.
background -- Web pages may have special patterns or colors "underneath" the text in the document.
backward compatible -- Supporting earlier versions.
bandwidth -- The capacity of a computer channel or data transmission cable and measured in bits or bytes per second. A measure of the amount of information that can flow through a given point at any given time.
baud rate -- A unit for measuring the speed of data transmission. The number of times the communications line changes states each second. Measurement is often confused with bits per second. See bps.
BBS -- Acronym for Bulletin Board System, a system offering information that can be accessed via computers, modems, and phone lines.
Beehive -- A community Web site based on the Beeline-AIR System (coined by Míc Miller).
Beeline, The -- Any Web site that utilizes the Beeline-AIR System. See Beeline-AIR System.
Beeline-AIR System -- The area information retrieval system that lets one go quickly (fewest mouse clicks), and with predictable assurance, to publishedWeb content on a specific topic; this system is unique bee-cause of its "local-to-global" approach (coined by Míc Miller). See search.
bin -- Abbreviation for binary. See digital.
binhex -- A method of encoding files from 8-bit to 7-bit format while preserving all file attributes.
bit -- Acronym for Binary difIT, a single digit number in base-2 (zero or one). The smallest unit of computerized data.
bitmap -- A binary representation of a graphic object used to convert an image into pixels.
BITNET -- Acronym for Because It's Time NETwork, a network of educational sites separate from the Internet, but e-mail is freely exchanged between BITNET and the Internet.
blended threat -- A software program that combines the characteristics of viruses, worms and Trojan horses. See Trojan horse, virus and worm.
blog -- See weblog.
blogger -- Someone who authors a weblog or "blog."
board -- Abbreviated reference to a message board or bulletin board service. See BBS and message board.
bookmark -- A URL that has been saved so that a user can return directly to that Web address. Also called "favorite."
bps -- Acronym for Bits Per Second, a method of measuring data transmission speed. See baud rate.
browse -- To casually explore rather than examine in detail.
browser -- A software program that reads HTML documents and allows the user to navigate the World Wide Web. A person that casually explores the Web.
bton -- A Beeline button, a small graphic image representing, and usually linked to, a Web page or area of a Beehive (coined by Míc Miller). Abbreviation for Bloomington, where The Beeline at www.bton.com was created and is the original Beehive.
bulletin board -- See BBS and message board.
buzzzword -- Any word used in The Beeline or a Beehive site that can bee spelled phonically with the word "bee." Examples of buzzzwords (intentionally spelled with an extra "z") are: bee-fore, bee-ginning, bee-low, bee-utiful, etc. Also, buzzzwords are used to deter would-bee pirates from stealing this site's content.
byte -- A set of bits that represent a single character. See bit.
