FAQ -- Acronym for Frequently Asked Questions, a page or section within a Web site that answers the most common questions on a certain topic. An updated file posted to newsgroups or servers. It is considered bad form to ask a question that's covered in a FAQ page or section.
favorite -- A URL that has been saved so that you can return directly to that Web address. Also called "bookmark."
fax -- Abbreviated term for facsimile.
FDDI -- Acronym for Fiber Distributed Data Interface, a standard for transmitting data on optical fiber cables at a rate of around 100,000,000 bits-per-second.
file -- Any amount of information that is grouped together as one unit.
file compression -- A programming technique by which a file can be reduced in size.
filename extension -- A suffix code identifying the type or nature of a file.
Finger -- An Internet software tool for locating people on other Internet sites; also used to give access to nonpersonal information.
firewall -- A division bee-tween a computer system on the Internet and the Internet as a whole. Firewalls are used to limit access of the system's users to the outside world, and vice versa, for security and economic reasons.
fixed-width fonts -- Fonts that have distorted letters so that they are all the same width.
flame -- An inflammatory message from a user in regard to a breach of "Netiquette" on another user's part.
flame war -- An online discussion or correspondence that degenerates into a series of personal attacks rather than a discussion of positions and / or ideas.
folder -- A group of files in a directory.
Folk-tech Style -- A distinctive Web design style created by Míc Miller.
font -- A set of characters that, together, make up a typeface such as Helvetica, Times, or Courier.
Fonts -- A dialog box that enables the user to change the font used to display text on Web pages.
form -- An interactive Web document. The document can contain fields into which readers can type information. This information could be used as part of a survey, to purchase an item, to search a database, and so on.
forum -- An online place where users with similar interests may find information, exchange ideas, share files, and get help on a particual topic or are of interest.
frame relay -- High-speed packet switching protocol suited for data image transfer. Used with wide area networks (WANs) and limited in effectively transmitting real-time video and voice.
freeware -- Software created by independent programmers and made available to users free of charge by downloading from the Internet or local area networks (LANs). See shareware.
Frontier -- A Macintosh-based scripting environment.
FTP -- Acronym for File Transfer Protocol, a method for transferring files to and from remote computers on the Internet. See anonymous FTP.
