IETF -- Acronym for Internet Engineering Task Force, the community of Internet users that determine how the Internet will evolve and operate.
imagemap -- A graphic image that has been "mapped" so that every pixel in the image potentially corresponds to a URL. Regions of an imagemap can be drawn which, when the user clicks within the "x,y" coordinates that define that image (a square, circle or polygon), the URL defined by the imagemap author as corresponding to that region appears onscreen.
index -- A service on the Internet, such as The Beeline and Yahoo, that arranges information to help you select what you want to read.
inline image -- A graphic image that is displayed in a Web browser's window, along with HTML text (as opposed to an external image, which most be downloaded and viewed with a separate program).
insertion point -- The blinking vertical line in a document's window marking the place where information can be entered, edited, or deleted.
interactive -- Having the ability to act on each other, as in a chat room or with a hypermedia program.
interactive media -- A relational (usually graphical) database where document files are referenced and / or linked to one another (pioneered by Intergraph and their Interactive Graphics Design System); any form of electronic media that responds to the actions of the user.
interlaced image -- An extra step in the information process that enables a browser to display increasing amounts of information, in passes, instead of the entire image at once. A low-resolution version appears after the first pass, then a medium-resolution version appears after a second pass, and finally the final image displays after the last pass.
Internet -- An international network of networked computers that evolved from ARPANET. See ARPANET.
intranet -- A private computer network inside a company or organization used for internal purpses only.
IP -- Acronym for Internet Protocol, the set of standards by which information is transmitted on the Internet.
IPN -- Acronym for Internet Protocol Number, a unique number consisting of 4 parts separated by periods ( . ) to identify node addresses on the Internet.
IRC -- Acronym for Internet Relay Chat, a huge multi-user live chat facility.
ISDN -- Acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network, a set of standards for transmitting voice, data, and video simultaneously.
ISO -- Acronym for International Standards Organization, the group that defines computing and communications standards.
ISDN -- Acronym for Integrated Services Digital Network, a way to move data over telephone lines.
ISP -- Acronym for Internet Service Provider, a company or organization that provides access to the Internet in some form.
