m-commerce -- Abbreviation for mobile commerce, transacting business through wireless devices.
MacBinary -- A standard for storing resources in a Macintosh file's data fork. The name of an application that both decodes and encodes MacBinary files.
MacOS -- Abbreviation for Macintosh Operating System.
macro -- A "recording" of keystrokes and / or mouse movements / clicks on a computer for "play back" and used to automate a repetitive task.
MacTCP -- Apple Computer software that enables a Macintosh to interact with other computers via TCP / IP.
maillist -- A system that allows people to send an e-mail message to one address whereupon the message is copied and sent on to a list of "subscribers."
megabyte -- A unit of measure for data storage equal to 1.024 kilobytes or 1,048,576 bytes of data. See byte and kilobyte.
memorandum of engagement -- An agreement, usually between service provider and client, stating an intent to enter into a working relationship; a pre-contract document.
memory cache -- The part of the computer's RAM set aside to process and store information.
message -- A note posted on a message board for others to read. See post.
message board -- An area where users can post messages to exchange information, ask a question, or reply to another message.
message center -- A cluster or group of message boards.
MIME -- Acronym for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, a standard used for transmitting varying file formats across computing platforms.
mirror -- An exact copy of something.
mirror site -- An exact copy of another Web or FTP site.
modem -- Abbreviation for MOdulator / DEModulator, a device that connects a computer to a phone line. Converts computer's digital signals to analog audio frequencies so they can be transmitted over phone lines.
modem file -- An information file that stores modem settings for connecting to the Internet and World Wide Web.
moderator -- Usually a host who facilitates a conference or chat room discussion and manages any protocols.
MOO -- Acronym for Mud, Object Oriented, one of several kinds of multi-user role-playing environments.
Mosaic -- The graphical information browser that was instrumental in making the World Wide Web popular and developed at NCSA. See NCSA.
MPEG -- Acronym for Moving Pictures Experts Group, a movie-file format commonly used on the Web.
MUD -- Acronym for Multi-User Dungeon or Dimension, a multi-user simulation environment.
MUSE -- Acronym for Multi-User Simulate Environment, a kind of MUD with little or no violence.
