screen name -- A pseudonym or "handle" that is used in place of the user's real name.
script editor -- An application that enables a user to build scripts.
scroll -- The movement of incoming information on the computer screen. The act of repeatedly typing similar words on the screen, or spacing out the letters of a word.
scroll bar -- The bar on the side of a window or frame that allows the contents to move up and down, or on the bottom of a window or frame to move the information to the right and left.
search -- Specific exploration of online information rather than a casual examination. See database, file, library, and searchable.
search engine -- A program used by a search service that takes users through the Internet to find what they want information on. When a search request is sent to a search engine, the request is checked against the index that the engine has already compiled. Also called "crawlers," "spiders," "wanderers," or "worms." See robot.
searchable -- A collection of logically related records or database files that serve as a single central reference.
section -- The broadest division of information within The Beeline. See category and topic.
security certificate -- A chunk of information that is used by the Secured Socket Layer (SSL) protocol to establish a secure connection. See certificate of authority and SSL.
self-extracting archive (.sea) -- A compressed file that contains instructions to automatically decompress itself when opened.
server -- A computer running a special program that can send Web pages to browsers in response to requests. See client and network.
server push -- A way of creating documents whose contents are refreshed periodically by "pushing" data to the Web browser.
SGML -- Acronym for Standard General Markup Language, an international standard for specifying and marking up documents. HTML is a subset of SGML.
shareware -- Software created by independent programmers for downloading by any user on a trial basis or for a trial time period. Users are asked to pay a fee (usually nominal) if they decide to keep the software. See demoware and freeware.
ShrinkIt -- A compression utility for Apple II computers to compress one or more files into a smaller file, called an archive.
shorthands -- The collective term for the many emoticons and abbreviations used during a chat session.
S-HTTP -- Acronym for Secure HyperText Transfer Protocol, a security standard established by EIT/Terisa Systems.
signature file -- A text file appended to the bottom of an e-mail message or news posting. Commonly called ".sig files." Best kept to four lines or less.
signature quote -- Quotation or saying put at the end of an electronic message.
sign-on kit -- The software, registration codes, and directions for establishing an online account.
simulchat -- A chat session held simultaneously with a radio or television call-in broadcast.
.SIT -- Filename extension that denotes a file created by a StuffIt software program. Also denotes a "stuffed" or "archived" file.
site stamp -- Postage stamp-sized image and design that represents a particular Web site (coined by Míc Miller).
slash -- The "/" symbol, used to define the path segments in a URL address.
SLIP -- Acronym for Serial Line Internet Protocol, a way of using TCP / IP over a serial line, such as a dialup modem. Also referred to as a "point-to-point connection."
SMDS -- Acronym for Switched Multimegabit Data Service, a standard for very high-speed data transfer.
smiley -- A string of characters that creates an emoticon or "emotional clue" to the feelings of the writer. See emoticon. For examples see Computing Acronyms: Emoticons.
SMTP -- Acronym for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, a set of standard procedures for transferring mail.
snail mail -- Conventional postal mail.
SNMP -- Acronym for Simple Network Management protocol, a set of standards for communication with devices (for example: routers, hubs, and swithches) connected to a TCP / IP network.
sounds -- Any audio output that cannot be classified as music.
spam -- Unsolicited, commercial postings. (Coined after a Monty Python comedy skit and a registered trademark of Hormel Corp.)
spider -- See robot and search engine.
spoofing -- The act of submitting someone else's e-mail address without permission.
spyware -- A general term for a software program that serreptitiously monitors your activities on the computer.
SQL -- Acronym for Structured Query Language, a specialized programming language for sending queries to databases.
SSL -- Acronym for Secured Socket Layer, a protocol designed to enable encrypted, authenticated communications across the Internet.
StuffIt Expander -- Freeware published by Aladdin Systems that decodes and decompresses encoded files that have also been compressed.
surf -- To cruise the Internet in an attempt to discover something new.
SWARM -- Acronym for Society of Web Authors, Renderers & Marketeers.
symmetrical cryptography -- A coding scheme that uses a single key to encode and decode messages. See key, private key, and public key.
synchronous -- Data communication technique in which bits are transmitted and received at a fixed rate. Used to transmit large blocks of data over special communications lines. See asynchronous.
sys -- Shorthand for System. See system.
sysop -- Abbreviation for System Operator, the person who operates and maintains a computer system or service.
system -- Shorthand for computer system, operating system or both. See operating system.
